From simulation to reality

Roller bearing manufacturer SKF automates its warehouse on the fly

Based on extensive process-time simulations, Jungheinrich developed a customised logistics solution to automate the material flow of SKF. Now, 16 driverless electric order pickers of type EKX 516a ensure greater productivity in a new narrow-aisle warehouse with 18 aisles.

Challenges

  • Changed order structures and a too-high proportion of non-value added time
  • Adaptation of the existing warehouse structures to the requirements of the new logistics solution
  • Complex multi-stage commissioning in four construction phases during ongoing operation
  • Restructuring of order picking from man-to-goods to goods-to-man principle

Solutions

  • Automated narrow-aisle warehouse with 18 aisles and around 18,700 storage locations
  • 16 automated Jungheinrich EKX 516a narrow-aisle trucks
  • 8 order picking workstations with integrated electric floor conveyor and 13 EBB vehicles
  • Jungheinrich Warehouse Control System WCS with customised interface to the SKF WMS

Successes

  • Customised logistics solution based on extensive process-time simulations in advance
  • Increased productivity, maximum process reliability and improved working conditions
  • Optimised use of space with a double-digit increase of the limit capacity
  • Assurance of delivery capability during the entire eighteen-month rebuild phase
